On 29th June, 2015, First Avenue launched its Corporate Social Investment Initiative, The First Avenue Institute. The objective of the institute is to stimulate interest in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics for less privileged schoolgirls. We achieve this through a one-week school camp for learners at the University of Johannesburg TechnoLab. For our inaugural school camp, we hosted 10 girls from ages 13 to 17. During the week, the girls attended a robotics course and attended multiple workshops from the likes of Google Reach and the AIRPLANE Factory. They also attended various life skills workshops in public speaking (Voice Clinic) and food preparation and presentation (Hospitality Experience). The College of Engineering of the University of New Hampshire, USA, lent its 12 year experience to the camp courtesy of Professor Robert Henry’s participation. Please find below two videos of the camp which were televised on etv. We also share a few photos from the camp. First Avenue would like to thank its clients for making it possible for us to sponsor the camp and we plan to increase the number of learners on the camp next year.
