On 3 November, 2015, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) fined MTN a record amount of $5.2 billion for failing to disconnect 5 million unregistered subscribers in their Nigerian operation.  The scale of the fine represented 20% of their market capitalisation prior to the announcement.
